Working hard in Term 2

Unfortunately Jarius had to go home because he was sick. We will work out something for him next semester. He was working so hard and deserves a break

The girls play a curtain raiser game at the Gabba before the Lions game on 25th May. We explained that they could not come down to Brisbane for the practices so the Lions sent a player up to train with them at Downlands. 'Tiwi Magic" he was heard to exclaim!

Josetta was at Toowoomba TAFE today to enroll in a course. Tiwi kids face a Lead Ceiling blocking employment back home. For 40 years Tiwi have come down to Southern Schools, but Nguiu jobs all go to Non-Tiwi , because they are considered more qualified.

We feel we should commence vocational training while they are at Downlands. Josetta has been at Downlands for two years now - she is challenging the all time record established by Sebastian Rioli.

AbStudy will not cover TAFE fees. AbStudy does not cover Downlands fees, but Downlands don't care, they are just pleased to have Tiwi kids at the school. We will need to pay another $200 for Josetta to commence the TAFE course. We are also paying for Noreen to learn the piano. the teacher believes she has talent. We have to encourage and savor talent and grasp opportunity where ever because success bring confidence.

Please pray for Jarius. He was as good a kid as we have had down here.

A tough start to Term 2, 2008

Three kids arrived back last week, and three missed the plane. This is very hard for everyone but thank God for Qantas and Tiwi Travel who gave us credits. Two arrived late so we will have five for this term.

We need kids to stay at least two years to realize the benefits of a southern education. Of all those who have come: Josetta has made it to two years, three have had three terms, and three had two terms and one lasted only one term at Downlands.

In future Kidney Disease prevention Nurses on the Tiwi Islands will help get kids to the plane on time, but the prime force remains the parents in the direction and empowerment they supply.

They talk of Glass Ceilings constraining women in the workforce, Tiwi contend with a Lead Ceilings. Despite 40 years of these education attempts, there are no Tiwi lawyers, doctors, accountants or nurses.

Other kids at the school try to emulate members of the family. Tiwi don't have such a vision of career and vocational path.

There is temptation to blame the victim here, but look at all the Tiwi boys playing AFL - a discipline requiring ability, commitment and hard training. There is no Lead Ceiling in football because talent breaks through.

A Lead Ceilings has to be breached from both sides and our efforts will have a TAFE focus so kids come through Downlands further along the path towards a career. Maybe we have to encourage a bit of Affirmative Action from the other side.

Laurie Reedy of Vinnies Toowoomba (in photo above) insisted the new boy had the newest and best warm clothes. "No Second Hand" said Laurie, "If they are here to do their best, we will give them the best!!"
